I fail :(
I've read so many guides, not sure if they're dated or not with old files.

I downloaded the SD creator.
I "wrote" Librelec-genericx86_64-9.1.501.img

Put the USB in my minix and it just boots up like normal - what am i missing?

Power off your NEO U9-H [keep the power supply and display connected.
Press and hold the power button for approx. 8 seconds until the unit grabs the USB or SD-card.

I did and it brings me to a pretty big menu with lots of options...Which one is it to boot off the USB?

-Reboot System now
-Reboot to bootloader
-Mount/system:it says it cannot load volume
I did those both and nothing happened - do you think i loaded Libre properly onto the USB? I only put the one file, old tutorials called for multiple files being downloaded.

You better use CoreElec instead of LibreElec. CoreElec is a special Amlogic version and it's easier to install.

Just select the good device (U9-H) and go on : https://coreelec.org/

I haven't heard of Coreelec, thanks! I just want the best experience for playing movies from my HD's. I don't stream movies from kodi -i plug in my HD's.

lol i just noticed all 3 of my USB keys have libre on them and now all the room is gone - even if i format them they have no room. Are the USB keys done if you put it on them, or is there a way to remove it so i can put Corelec on it?

I did everything and its not booting up - stuck at the Minix boot up screen...
Minix in white letters.
I unplugged the power, put in the USB - held power for at least 15 seconds and it goes to the white minix screen.

I never installed coreelec but i know you have to download for the right device: (in this case for U9-H )

S912 with 2Gb RAM

I had to move the dtb.img from the root over to the main directory - i just booted in corelec! It says "partition resizing in progress". It's sitting at "resizing file system"

Edit- its been resizing the partition for 15 minutes...now the red elect circle is gone.

even if i format them they have no room.

Formatting completely wipes all data from a disc/device. They should be wiped clean ready to write new data.

How are you "formatting" your USB drives?

What devices do you have available? I.e. a Windows PC, Android media hub, Macbook, etc.?

Windows...
See my above edit -Elect says its resizing the parition for over 15 minutes and "resizing file system". It had the red Elect icon in the middle of the screen and now thats done and its black.

YEAH! It rebooted and working!
I'll be honest, i'm not even sure what Corelec does - i read about it and seemed like a fun project to get going.
My situation:
I use kodi to play all my movies from hard drives (no NAS, too many powered HD's with content to start over and it works for me :)).

-Most of my files are the 50 gig or so 2160 P/ HDR/Atmos
-My TV show hard drive is always 1080p and i do have some 1080p movies.

-when watching a 4K file i would have to go into the minix and switch it from 1080p/60 to 4K/60 manually. I would than have to play the movie for a second, go back into the setting and change the chromo to 4.2.2 10 bit (i think that's what it was - the 2nd one down).

When i watched my 1080p, i would have to go change it again. My understanding is using corelect it now does it automatically?
-I do not use my minix for any apps at all - just watching my Hard drive movies - no streaming at all.

Which settings do i change to optimize in kodi?
I notice my Atmos is gone. The "allow audio passthrough" is checked but not Atmos is audio is coming out anymore. I use to have a bunch of audio options i could check (DTS DH, Dolby True Audio, dolby Atmos etc).
How do i get that back?

I went to Audio and even tried to change the audio output device from all the options (Alsa PCM, ALSA HDMI etc) i went through all of them and turned the passthrough on and off and nothing...

Edit- other issue is i now have subtitles - i can't seem to turn them off.

Hi. Glad you made it ☺.
I don't use coreelec as i said before but i think:

You don't have to change nothing in kodi settings (display).
It is a "appareance problem".
If you are playing a 4k/1080p movie kodi does that automaticaly.
Leave display settings with default settings.

Sound is not with me... I only know basic stuff and i only use tv speakers.
I use default audio settings and i use kodi 18.4 with CE latest ROM.

Sound - you have to modify some settings (passthrough, etc) and have a appropriate file/hardware that support that.

All my files are Atmos source, and they were working - now its just dolby surround, not Atmos.
I can't modify the passthrough at all - i can click audio passthrough on and off, but turning it on doesn't do anything.

@Paraprop

I dont think theres really any need to use another OS over android as Kodi works absolutely fine on the U9 with Stock FW008

Providing you have a compatible AVR, passthrough works fine for the audio options you have listed, and Im sure that HDR works fine to.

Follow this guide for your audio settings using Kodi 18.4 >>> https://kodi.wiki/view/Audio_quickstart_guide

@ArcticWolf may be able to offer best settings for HDR using a 4K HDR TV on your Minix u9

I'm an idiot about the subtitles, i've turned them on and off a hundred times with kodi :)
As far as sound: My Atmos is gone but all my speakers are active including my 4 Atmos speakers. It dosn't say Atmos on my receiver anymore, just Dolby Surround. I cannot scroll to find Atmos either, again its gone.
