linux on u9

Never tried but it could work. Libreelec and Coreelec are Linux project based and work fine.
You can try to install Linux on an USB pendrive and boot on it.

I am struggling to understand what advantage using a Linux OS on the U9-H would be over running LibreElec or CoreElec, both of which are dedicated to media playback.

Likewise I even struggle to see why you need to use LibreElec or Corelec to run Kodi...tried it once or twice just to see and soon abandoned it....:D

because the android version has some problems for passthrough audio (on my setup) and no true hd and dts hd support.
(since fw006 and kodi 17.4 update this options disappeared from kodi)
dolby digital and dts has audio drops

with coreelec(kodi 18 beta) our libreelec (kodi 17.6)no problems with passthrough and support for true hd and dts hd
