MINIX Neo U1 remote - only power button works

Hey guys
I've had the MINIX Neu U1 since 2017 and I haven't used it in a long time. Today I powered it on, replaced the remote's (MINIX A2 LITE) batteries and tried to use it, but only the power button worked (it can turn the device on / off without a problem). All the other keys are unresponsive. I thought I'd try the Android remote app, but the device is not connected to the WiFi and I can't connect it without using the remote (or can I?). Ethernet is not an option since the setup is too far from the router.
I also read this thread and tried to reinstall the firmware in 2 methods:
1. Using USB Stick: I reached the screen in which I have to choose Apply update from EXT, but I couldn't choose it because the remote is not functioning.
2. Using an OTG cable: The USB Burning Tool couldn't recognize the device.
Any other options I can try?

EDIT: I also tried the device's original remote (with new batteries) and it didn't work at all (not even the power button).

Is the A2 Lite USB dongle plugged in to the U1?

If it is you can try re-pairing the remote with the dongle.

You could connect a USB keyboard/mouse to allow you to enable WiFi.

That worked, thanks. I connected it to the WiFi, but the remote app couldn't find it for some reason.
I also used the remote keyboard to try and flash it, but the device failed to mount the flash drive:

Thanks guys, I had completely forgotten that the remote comes with a receiver dongle that I've lost. I've just found the dongle and everything is working now!
