then back up any apps that you may have installed outside of the playstore, and that you want to keep, using esfile explorer and copy them to a USb stick to reinstall

I am really sorry. I had some hope in the lighter procedures. When it happened to my U1 nobody new exactly what was the cause, and I had the exact same decision to make as you have now. I left the box as it was also because I would need some time to put it back, and after all the box was correctly set to my TV by then.

Then came the day I had to connect some Bluetooth headphones to it, and I realised I would need those settings back... Later I found that my problem would have been solved with the upper @MINIX - John's solution because it had been caused by an update to the Contacts app.

Quick update, did a factory reset, I have the settings menu back.
