NEO Z83-4U Ubuntu: Ubuntu 18.04.3 image

#2
Thanks! I'm running this in Virtualbox on my Mac while I'm waiting for my Neo Z83-4U to come in the mail. It's good to see Ubuntu get away from Unity and switch back to Gnome. But I'd still like to get rid of the launcher bar and go back to icons on my desktop, like the Linux Mint MATE desktop environment. It would be nice to see some Minix Ubuntu spins available with other desktop environments like MATE, Cinnamon or even XFCE without the launcher bar.

My new NEO Z83-4U came in the mail today. I ordered it from Amazon earlier this month. How can I tell if it has the new firmware? Should I write the ISO file to a bootable thumb drive and install it, just to be safe?

So same question here: can I install this ISO without starting over from scratch on machine setup? My gut says no. I, too, appear to have apt-updated my way to 18.04.4. It'd be lovely if there were some way to replace just these "special" drivers without starting over. Otherwise, how do you keep the rest of the system up-to-date?

I tested several linux distros with a virtual machine and one of them installation was not needed.

But i advice you to backup the files you need and after use minix custom image (first post above).
With this you ensure that everything works better for your device.

Can someone share the drivers or the kernel that it's used on that ISO of Ubuntu? (If it's possible).
Because I wanna make kinda similar like this iso, but, with Xubuntu.

I have Minux Neo Z83 4U V2 box. I wish to install this firmware and thus prepared required live CD with this firmware. I changed BIOS to boot using my USB. It does show grub screen to 'Try Ubuntu / Install Ubuntu'. However, selecting any of the option hangs. It never starts the actual Ubuntu. Please help. I have bricked my box earlier by trying to upgrade to Ubuntu 19.10.

If the external usb (pen drive for example) is good and instalattion process went well the OS should start without the need of external usb and running on the eMMC.

Make sure your external usb is good and with the full content for the OS.

Hi notul,

I downloaded OS ISO from this post only. Copied it to USB using Ubuntu 'Startup disk creator'.
After booting from USB and showing the two options 'Try / Install Ubuntu', installation does NOT proceed. I get blank screen and everything stops there. Later monitor shows no HDMI signal and shuts itself off.

Please note that I am NOT able to proceed with Ubuntu installation from USB at all. Please help

Hi notrui,

I made some progress. I had to edit grub options to include 'noapic noacpi nosplash' parameter. I am now able to get Ubuntu installation started.

Now the problem is that I only see '/dev/sda' (My USB) on 'Device for boot loader installation'. I do NOT see my 64 GB HDD on the box where I wish to select the HDD on which I wish to install Ubuntu. What should I do? It only lists my USB and not the HDD on the box for installation.

@Mangesh you say you 'bricked my box earlier by trying to upgrade to Ubuntu 19.10' - what exactly do you mean and how did you 'unbrick' it? Also what options have you changed in the BIOS?
