No 5.1 audio in XBMC

Hi,
I've a problem with audio in XBMC for minix (version 16.3).
I get only 2ch audio even I playback a 5.1 file (both AC3 and DTS tracks).
The minix is connected directly through HDMI to a surround system that notifies me 2 channels audio.
The 5.1 audio works properly with MX player but I' ve many directories and I prefer Kodi navigation system.

Thank you in advance

what do you mean by 2 channels audio---are you saying it is stereo ?

try to post screenshots of your kodi audio settings so we can take a look

Yes, it is just stereo.

As you can see, the same file produces 5.1 audio when I use DTS track and 2.0 audio when I use AC3 track. In this case even if Surround system notifies LPCM 2.0 I have no sound.

I think the 'Number of channels' options is changeable.
You can change it from 2 to 5.1.

I thought no matter what it needs to be set to 2?!

  • Number of channels: If your audio connection is digital, this represents the channels supported by the audio connection; if it’s analog, it will represent the number of speakers your system is using.

I confirm that 'Number of channels' has to be set to "2".
It is weird but I think this is a some kind of incompatibility. How can it be???? No one in MInix tested this before started to sell the device?
Where is the bundled app right version?

how are you connecting to your sound system, which AVR do you have and what speaker set up do you have ( ie5.1)

I would also suggest that you should make a clean break and install the lollipop firmware and install kodi 17.6

Minix id directly connected through HDMI to a Sony 5.1 surround System.
I'll try to update later today.

Thank you for your help but nothing is working. Just update to official Lollipop rom anh I' have the same problem: no AC3 passthrough in Kodi 17.6, same file sounds good in MX player so I think the problem can't be The AVR.
I see there is an option named "audio output device" that can't be modified and I believe that can be the problem, MX player has 3 options more "automatic"... maybe a sort of driver issue. Is there someone here that use a configuration such mine with this device?

not sure what your issue is as I never had such a problem with my old minix x8hplus and audio passthrough.

If you have an optical cable can you try connecting with that to see if you have the same result. Obviously you will need to change some of the audio settings to fit.

Well, nothing of this is working so I'm rolling back to old configuration with DTS works well and AC3 disabled (i will use MX player for those).
However, I'm not the only one with this problem...
See this for example.
Best explanation of what can cause the problem, I think, is here where an user says:

Are we talking about the AML "IEC" passthrough or the Android API, lollipop+, "RAW" passthrough, here?
Assuming it's AML IEC, Kodi does not support it. "RAW" is supported in the v17 nightlies.
SPMC do support AML IEC if the java "AudioFormat.ENCODING_TRUEHD" is defined, as a way to detect that those AML patches has been merged.

I'm not a developer so the second part of the message doesn't mean much for me.
I tried to use SPMC but it dosn't work even if I switch between IEC and raw passthrough.
Hope this thread can help someone else in future.

Thanks

can you provide a link to your test.mkv file...id like to ty it on my setup..does it contain multiple sound tracks...are you sure you are selecting the correct one each time in kodi ?

Every file with AC3 track doesn't sound at all if "passtrhough" and "AC3 capable device" are ticked. If the file has DTS+AC3 tracks then DTS will work properly instead AC3 will have the problem. The test file is a 6GB video and I'm not authorized to share it with 3rd party. You can find here a small multi tracks video that give me the same problem.
