Are you sideloading or trying to install from the Play Store?

I don't think APKMirror is illegal. Unofficial, yes, but not illegal. I think "legitimate" or "official" source would have been better phrasing.

Any site or app that offers apps for free that should be paid for in the Play Store are illegal:

Bt sport can be downloaded for free .... But you must have a subscription to be able to use the service .... A subscription that I have .... But that I can no longer use on my u22

If it was working before the update then it is not U22 related, please contact the developer of BT Sport for a solution.

Do all your other Android devices have Android 9 installed?

I am really not sure what you want me to say, it was working on the U22 before the update and now it is not, what could possibly have changed in the U22 to make you suspect it is the U22 at fault?

In my experience Aptoide reports updates when in the Play Store they do not exist!

minix u9 and minix u22 ... don't allow me to update app to v8.0.3

It spits out App not installed for me, what firmware is your U22 on? Did you sideload while connected via a VPN on a UK server or did you install from Play Store (again with VPN on a UK server)?
