Terrible video performance

Hello all,

I have just purchased a Neo Z83-4 Plus to replace an entry-level Android box I had.
Main objectives of this upgrade were to be able to reproduce both 4K and FullHD videos, with an overall more powerful package. Another thing I wanted the Minix for was to watch HD IPTV streams.

First impressions are a major disapointment though. I already gave up 4k video files as there’s no smoothness whatsoever, it’s like watching something in slow motion. 1080p video files are ok.

Then there’s the IPTV streams. Performance in 4K and 1080p is miserable. I was having smooth performance in these streams when I was using my 40€ android box.

So guys, how is this possible?? Am I missing something? Or is the machine just weak?
If a 200€ plus mini pc can’t deal with these simple tasks, what justifies its price?

Hope you guys can help me, otherwise I’m gonna try and sell it.

Thanks in advance!

Here's the message I sent today to the official Minix support:

Hello,

I'm coming to you because I've purchased a Minix NEO Z83-4 Plus and I'm experiencing a series of performance-related issues. I've bought this mini-computer to replace an old Android TV Box I had with the following specs:
Operating System: Android5.1
CPU: S905 quad-core cortex-A9 2.0 Ghz
GPU: Mali-450 5-Core GPU
RAM: 2GB DDR3
ROM: 8GB EMMC

The main purpose of the old Android Box and now of the Minix, are to reproduce 1080p and 4K video files, both internally stored and via streaming services. Additionally, I'm also a user of IPTV streaming services.

To my surprise, the Minix computer struggles really hard on all of these aspects. Here's more detail:
- 4K video is unwatchable. The rate at which the video is reproduced it's almost like watching something in slow motion;
- 1080p video runs "ok'ish". Sufficiently smooth to watch it, but still far from perfection;
- IPTV streams are also unwatchable, both in 1080p as well as 4k;
- Even YouTube through the browser at "only" 1080p is unwatchable

For your reference, the video tools I'm using are:
- Media Player Classic with Klite codec pack full for stored videos;
- Smarters IPTV Windows app for IPTV streams

Now, what am I doing wrong here? All windows updates are installed, and the Intel tool tells me all graphics drivers are up to date. Is this all this machine can do? Compared to my old Android Box, it's miles above in terms of hardware specs, and still, performance-wise, it's much much worse.

Please help me understand if there's a solution for this.
Thanks,
Fernando

Hello, from my experience for what you had to do you should have bought the minix u22xj to view 4k video (although it has some problems in the official firmware)Anyway .... the z83-4 I don't think reproduces 4k.

Thank you for your reply Alexdroid. I'd be happy if it reproduced 1080p flawlessly. But not even that...
I'm just shocked by how it gets outperformed by a 50€ android box.

For 4k or 1080p the best box is u22xj or u22xj max and you instal coreelec ....

For that kind of media the best is to use an android device (U22-XJ or U22-XJ-max).
If you only want/need kodi you can then install CoreELEC (as said eariler).

But since you already have the device you can test with one linux distro (ubuntu for example) (and then decide what is the best for you).

Note:
One thing is to use local streaming (from a NAS for example) , another is to use Internet streaming...
