UHD Video Playback Problems

Forgive me if this has has been addressed but I searched and couldn't find a solution to my problem.

I just bought a 4K TV (Samsung NU8000) and tried streaming large 4K movie files from my U9-H. Movies stuttered terribly. Downloaded 4K movies to a NAS and they were still unwatchable. I then bought a 3.0 USB HD plugged directly to the U9-H. Works better, but eventually the movies grinds to a halt! I've tried MX, Kodi, VLC players, same problem. The files range in size from 20 - 50 GB.

I'm so frustrated and would appreciate any help. Thanks.

Hey & welcome to the forum :).

How long have you had your U9-H?

I can understand your frustration, obviously your U9-H should be playing your 4K files normally :(!! However, additional details may be useful to help others diagnose your issues. (Think of anything that may be relevant & please, I'm not being condescending, we obviously have no idea of your abilities or what else you have tried other than what you've briefly mentioned) ;). For example, have you tried any further troubleshooting other than installing different media players alone, or trying the directly attached HDD?

It's certainly rather odd that this problem only improves very slightly when resorting to directly attached storage. However, that may be the best clue & probably your best place to start. It sounds like the box itself may possibly be slowing to a crawl for some reason.

Have you installed a lot of apps that could be using excessive system resources? (If yes, there may be insufficient resources remaining.) Have you also checked for a rogue app that's hogging resources? Have a clean up, you can always reinstall certain apps later.

(When you were using Kodi for example, did you check the logs for specific errors that may have helped?) Otherwise, have you also tried/checked the following?

Updated to the latest FW008 firmware?

Tested the downloaded files on your HDD directly using the TV's media player or on another available & capable device? Are they otherwise playing OK?

Have you been feeding Gremlins after midnight ;)?

Otherwise, eliminate network or other external hardware issues as a factor too!!

Tried different HDMI ports on your TV?

Are you using ethernet or Wi-Fi with the U9-H? (Obviously, not at times when using your USB3 HDD).

Checked your router/switches & tested your network for issues? (Streaming was unwatchable & then the same files were still unwatchable played over your local network from a NAS). Do the same files stream OK to a PC/laptop?

(If applicable). Were your large files playing normally on your previous TV even if it may not have actually been capable of displaying at 4K resolution?

(Less likely to have anything to do with it based on your comments thus far, but worth checking just in case)...

Is there an AVR, soundbar or any other device between your U9-H & the TV?

Tried different HDMI cables? (You will require high speed cables for 50GB 4K movies.)

Apologies for all the questions ;), eliminate what probably isn't the problem & narrow the field ;).

Also, can you supply info on the files that are giving you problems?

Such as, are the files 4:2:0, 4:2:2 or even 4:4:4?
8 bit or 10 bit?
Video bit rate?
Are the files camera originals or...?

I watch 4K 4:2:0 8 bit and 10 bit at bit rates up to 100Mbps all the time without issues, but the U9-H does have issues with 10bit 4:2:2 150Mbps video files.

I was using Kodi running on android, but switched recently to CoreELEC which is a Linux OS running Kodi 18 RC2. Linux runs with far fewer issues than android.
