I have found that newer versions of Android come at a price, mainly increased intrusiveness, reduced privacy and new restrictions on what the user can control in the OS. Personally, I think the only winner in these continued upgrades to the OS is Google, it is certainly not the user.
I own a U22-XJ. I bought it for the hardware improvements. What good is any update to Android? I have a U9-H, and honestly Android 6 is just fine by me. Android 6 offered us adoptable storage and I really haven't been impressed by any update since. App developers that making their apps needlessly incompatible with older versions of Android are complicit in making good hardware prematurely obsolete. I'm more concerned about how well the device runs Android over having the latest Android.

My U22-XJ has installed security patch from august 2018 that is a concern for me. System Updates are actually very necessary too provide Bug fixes & Security Update Patches, improves system stability and also some times UI improvements. Security Updates are very important because older security can make you more vulnerable to attacks. Its nice things run fst and smooth but security first specially nowadays..

As @Fernando86 said i agree:
"I'm more concerned about how well the device runs Android over having the latest Android"
I agree with you that is important security updates and patches but more important is Regular Backups (of personal data such as docs, files, etc):
NAS, cloud, etc.
