Minix U9 FW0008 - Rebooting itself

I've had the box for about a year. 6 months ago it started to reboot itself every month or 2 so I just lived with it. At the end of May, it started to reboot itself once a week and I kept ignoring it. For the last couple of weeks, it's rebooted nightly in the middle of watching shows, so it's time that I do something about it.

I did a full reset and re-installed everything from scratch on Saturday. That didn't make any difference, it's still rebooting at least once a night.
Reboots happen in both Kodi 18.2 and in IPTV, so it's not Kodi specific.
One reboot happened when I was updating an android program (Before the rebuild).

A couple of questions:

How do I look at logs to see if I can find out what's causing this?
Has anyone else seen this or have a solution?

Thanks in advance folks.

Hi.
You can try reflashing the firmware, install the basic apps you might need and then test (with kodi 18.2 for example).

Already done. Thanks for the suggestion tho.

If your power unit has a click adapter (one of mine does) like the one in the picture, make sure it is well connected by pushing it hardly into place (you can actually hear a click sound), I saw that happening before when it looked like it was and then you realise it actually was not. Make sure the connection to the power line is also solid in all its connecting points.

Make sure the box is not over a hot spot such as near the breathing holes of the AV unit, as the box itself exhales a lot of heat underneath. I don't know about you but in my country 6 months ago it was winter time and the air temperature has slightly been increasing since then to a warm Summer now. Maybe the previous 6 months before it was a cold Summer, or something might have changed.

Since you fresh installed, your software should not be the cause, unless reading the software reviews tells you otherwise.

Thanks for the idea, but mine doesn't have the 'click adapter'. I did check to make sure that it's plugged in properly tho.

I'm in Canada. 6 months ago it was -30C outside, but +20C in the condo. It could be a heat build up issue, but it's sitting on wood and there's no real heat build up under it. I've moved tho. I guess I'll see if that helps tonight.

My guess is it's hardware related somehow because it's suddenly rebooted in 3 different programs so far.

FTR: The reboot problem seems to be fixed.
  1. I downloaded the firmware and installed it instead reinstalling from the box.
  2. Changed the power button to power off instead of sleep in case it was heat related.
It's been 5 days now, so looks good.

My friend who bought his minix late 2018 is having the same issues with the machine rebooting itself, during movies, tv shows etc.
I will lend him my PSU unit see if it behaves better, if its faulty I guess we can ask John for a new or should we contact the reseller first?
Possible to check temperature in kodi I guess?

There is another possible cause!

I have a U9-H where the pin on the back of the power connector (device socket) snapped.
If I held the DC plug in and pushed upwards the device would power up.

I ended up cutting away some of the plastic of the pcb mounted socket and soldering the pin together.

Sorry about the picture quality!

If you need a small/light app to check temps in real time try Tinycore :).

I took the PSU to the place I bought the Minix box. They tested it and said it's working properly. Now what?

Very nice work :). (If I'd attempted something like that you can be sure it would have ended in that horribly acrid smell of fried circuitry &/or clouds of thick grey smoke lol ;)!! (Not forgetting a fit of arbitrary military grade foul language too.))

As @Skynet previously mentioned, send @MINIX - John a PM with a brief summary of the problem & include a link to this thread as well. (Include a copy of your receipt if you can, it may help speed things up for you.)

Next thing to try would be a new PSU. (The retailer you took it to may have determined it's actually functioning but did they stress test it for a prolonged period to see if heat or other factors caused any fluctuation in current etc.?)

If that still fails, you may well have the same or a similar issue as @Villa has experienced. (However, he has the required skills to fix problems like that himself :), you may require a replacement but drive off that particular bridge when you get to it ;)).

Hopefully you'll be sorted out soon :).
