Hello Everyone,
Having issues with non dolby 5.1 channel sound when playing videos through an external usb drive. The minix box is directly connected to a yamaha rx-v683 (7.1 channel) av receiver via the hdmi cable. When I play the videos having 5.1 channel sound, it appears to downgrade this sound to 2.1 and the surround effetct is gone.
Note, that this does not happen when playing videos with dolby or dts 5.1 channel, those get properly reproduced in the receiver.
Its only with normal 5.1 channel that this issue is occurring.
Also, when I play the same normal 5.1 channel sound clips through a miracast screenshare from my computer and on my tv, the 5.1 channel gets properly reproduced on the av receiver, which is connected to the tv via HDMI ARC. So, its clear that the issue is occurring while playing the sound from the minix box.
Please help.

When you label this audio that your U22 & AVR are having issues with as "non-Dolby", is the actual audio format AAC, for example?

If yes, this is a known issue that has already been reported in the U22's bugtracker thread in that the device currently won't process/decode multichannel (5.1/7.1) AAC audio correctly & it's being down mixed to stereo only by default.

All we can presently do is hope this is an issue that will be addressed in due course, but please do not ask when that may be.

If your AVR has the built in capabilities to apply Dolby upmixing or DTS Neural:X upmixing itself, you could try selecting these modes while AAC audio is being sent to the AVR as stereo for the AVR to apply its own audio upmixing instead.

If successful, for example, this can be useful to revert the vocal channel back to the centre & to have the AVR up mix the stereo audio back to some semblance of 5.1 instead of all vocals switching to just the L/R fronts alone. It's far from perfect, ideal or ultimately as intended too, but it may help to improve the audio quality for you again of formats such as AAC until such times as the U22 can properly decode the audio natively.

Give it a try based on the capabilities of your AVR & see what effect you may get, (if any) ;).

Thanks for the prompt reply. Yes, I meant AAC audio. AC3 is being processed correctly to 5.1. My AVR does have the Cinema DSP, Dolby, DTS Neural upmixing, and I do get some semblance of surround from that, but its far from true 5.1 or 7.1, as you've stated.
Hope minix releases the fix soon.

All i get with multichannel aac is a slow / slurry sound
I would hope that this issue is given top priority, over and above that of the HD audio issues.
It is somewhat unthinkable that a flagship media player cannot handle multichannel AAC files correctly.;)

@MINIX - John, @MINIX - Chris , @MINIX – Martin : Yes, this must have top priority. Majority of the videos have AAC - 5.1 audio, and not being able to play them properly is somewhat of a deal breaker.

I get the same result as the OP unless I play multichannel AAC files (including the one above) via Kodi with passthrough enabled, using Kodi it works fine. I've also just tried some multichannel FLAC files with the same outcome.

to be clear, whilst Multichannel AAC and FLAC appear to play "fine" , but they are only in PCM 2.0

Maybe for you, but both my ears and the display on my AV amp tell me I'm getting 5.1, as opposed to what I get if I play them via for example VLC or MX Player.

Thats remarkable, your the only one who has reported that multichannel AAC work properly in Kodi.

Please double check the FLAC exanple and confirm that your hear sound coming out of all the correct speakers as visualised on the video.

Yes, all the discrete channels coming from the appropriate speakers.I'd suggest others give it a try.

Then please share how your system is configured connection wise, and all your U22 XJ android audio settings and kodi audio settings so that we can all benefit from your success. :)
