my brother has a minix u1 and can’t access the settings anymore.....what is the best option
 
This is no help whatsoever, but I do recall others having this issue before!
I cannot remember if there was a definite fix other than what @JJ-KwiK has already suggested.

Yes, I had read in other places about the factory reset not helping with the settings issue

Have you tried using a file manager to view and launch the mobile settings apk? The settings button within the launcher is set to tv settings, so you may be able to bypass it with the file manager. If you can, you can clear cache/data from there.

He needs to try my suggestion above.
Contacts app conflict.
 
OK
I suggest you check in the Play Store.
Go to My apps & games.
Select INSTALLED and scroll down to Contacts and select it.
If it has been updated you should be able to uninstall the updates.

As you can see below 2nd image mine has not been updated.

a few ideas ....

have you tried ( if you are using the standard metro launcher) selecting the Time/Weather Icon Box in the top RH corner..this takes you to advanced settings ?

Also if you have an A3 remote there is a settings button on the remote

also on the A2 remotes press the button with 6 dots on it, this takes you to all apps and maybe you can get to the settings app in there ??
