I tried a couple of VC1 files on my u22 using Kodi ( android firmware) and it is indeed choppy.The same files played a lot better using inbulit media players.

Also, the VC1 files played OK on the U22 using CoreELEC Kodi.

take from that what you want !

@Ralf

I think the best solution for you is rip your DVD movies with h264, h265 (it works for me very well).

If you have movies already with AV1 for example rip them again (i think you have all original DVDS).

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Video_Coding

"..Good video quality with substancial low bit rates..."

With that in mind you will be able to play your movies with all devices (U9-H, windows, etc) without the need of CoreElec, it is now your choice

Note:
X39 has some problems with some videos.

Yes thats what skynet say put all in handbrake ,but seriously this is not possible ,at this Time i have more than 450 Blu Ray rip in my pc ,no way to put them all in handbrake to mutch work , i rip them in thé best quality -mkv -passtrough , thé movies have thé original size ,thé original sound in my language ,not realy possible to make better (ok you Can rip in 2pass for a littel bit better)
I will try corelec on thé u9h ,full installation on intern memory ,i dont need Android ...have other minix for use Android apps (8hplus/x39)...so i Can transforme thé u9h just for playing vidéos ,connected to pc ...
I buy later the u22xj for replace thé u8plus ,so i think its a good Idea to transforme thé u9h on corelec device .....

You talk about rip thé movies again in 264/265...but this not work like this ,when you rip br you have some options for changing thé final size or for have it as mp4/avi/mkv....but when you make pastrough 1:1 mkv (best quality),thé final Can be différent on each blu-ray ,dépending the codec from thé Blu Ray ....at thé end you have Avc or Vc-1 or mpeg vidéo (older movies on Blu Ray ).....files
